Is to champion the early detection of melanoma – one of the world’s deadliest cancers.
HOW WE DO IT...
Each winter, we invite gentlemen to grow their beards and use them as life saving conversation starters – encouraging friends, family to get a skin check with a GP or Dermatologist.
All while raising funds towards free community skin checks for those who are most at risk.
HOW IT STARTED...
Back in 2010…we lost our mate Wes Bonny to melanoma. He was only 26.
Wes has a suss looking spot on his neck which he didn’t know was dangerous until it was too late. It spread into his bloodstream and eventually turned into a brain tumour. He fought it as much as he could. But tragically, it wasn’t enough.
At his wake, around a table full of schooners, we decided to start something. Something which would have a unique, memorable impact on the issue – much like Wes on the footy field.
After some research, we found that no-one was out there encouraging people to get a skin check, something which might have saved Wes’s life. But how?
Well… we looked around the bar and noticed some farmers with epic beards. No one our age was growing them back then, so we thought we’d give it a crack. We picked winter because it provided ideal beard growing conditions – and renamed it ‘Beard Season’.
During those first three months, with just a handful of intrepid ambassadors, we had SEVEN people writing in saying our beards might have saved their lives because they got a skin check. It was working!
People who met us in bars, at beaches or in the boardroom were finding melanoma early because of our wild, wooly beards!! It was a feeling we wanted to share. So each year, Beard Season got bigger.
We threw parties, got onto talk shows, teamed up with celebrities and even co-hosted a BEARD Exhibition which attracted over 35,000 people at one of the finest galleries in the UK!! It has been quite a journey so far, one we’d love you to be part of.
is to make melanoma… history.
Ideally, someone finds a cure.
But even then, people will still need to know they have something which needs attention. So, we want to keep building this movement so beards become a wooly, winter reminder for people all over the world to see a skin specialist for a #BeardSeasonSkinCheck.
The more we beards we grow, the more lives we’ll save.
